Over 650kg of food raised at MK Dons game

The Sunderland foodbank managed to gather over 650kg of food this past weekend at the Stadium of Light when the Black Cats faced MK Dons.

That intake is enough food for 87 three-day emergency food parcels and will be immensely important to the community going forward.

On Thursday, Sunderland U23 player Jordan Hunter visited the foodbank to help them process the new intake of food and to prepare for the busy Christmas period.

He said: “I think as a football club it is vital that we support the foodbanks and the fact that over 750kg of food was brought in by supporters on Saturday is fantastic.

“The link between the club and the foodbank is so important and I think that if we can help in any way then we should because we want to build that bond between the club and the people around the area of Sunderland.

“It is important that we keep going back. The more we help them, the more food they get and the more exposure they get which in turn means people will give more to help those that need it.

“There are people in need all around the country and I think it is important that clubs like Sunderland are helping these foodbanks grow and become more well known.

“If every club supported foodbanks, and the #HungerDoesntWearClubColours campaign in the way that we are at the moment, then we would be able to help far more people around the country.”

Hunter visited the foodbank on Thursday and was helping them prepare for their busiest time of the year.

“Yesterday we were there just helping them out because they are extending the foodbank.

“So, we were there helping to set that up. We were cleaning the cupboards out and sweeping the floors so that they are ready for the food that they will get over the Christmas period.”
