Sunderland AFC are coming to town…
Ahead of the festive period, the club will be engaging in a range of visits and initiatives within the city, as we support each other this Christmas.
Throughout November and December, players, staff and supporters will be travelling across the region to back numerous causes and raise vital awareness around the key issues facing our city.
For most of us, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for many, the festive period provides unimaginable challenges that nobody should face alone.
From helping to tackle homelessness and isolation to hospital visits across the region, SAFC will be leading the charge within the community to ensure festive cheer is sprinkled far and wide.
Under-23 players Kane Evans and Connor Slack kickstarted the drive last week, as the duo took part in Centrepoint’s ‘Sleep Out’ event at the Stadium of Light.
And the club have also been backing the Beacon of Light’s matchday mental health hub, with a plethora of further activity planned over the next two months from boot room to boardroom.
SAFC’s executive director, Charlie Methven, said: “So much good day-to-day work goes on throughout the year from the football club to the Foundation of Light – and indeed the many other phenomenal charities within the city – and although you can’t focus peoples’ attention all the time, the festive period provides the opportunity to think about giving and supporting those less fortunate than us.
“It is the time for the football club to put a marker down and say that the community is something that we serve, and not something that is separate from us. Over the next couple of months, we’re looking at bringing everyone together. Firstly, to celebrate the festive period, but also to focus attention on people for whom Christmas is a tougher time.
“Whether that’s supporting people that are homeless or helping to tackle loneliness, we’re going to be focusing a lot of our work around those issues.”
