Show Racism the Red Card: Local Youngsters Shine at Anti Racism Event

Local youngsters have been rewarded at inclusion organisation Show Racism The Red Card’s Annual School’s Competition.

The competition saw young people from schools throughout England create their own anti-racism messages in a variety of formats for what is the largest equalities-themed competition for young people in the country. The competition was divided into eight categories featuring artwork, creative writing and multi-media amongst others.

Youngsters from Cestria Primary School in Chester-le-Street were crowned winners in the Year 1-4 Creative Writing & Artwork Category, with pupils Lexi, Lucas, Eden, Milo, Ella and Dylan collecting the award.

Katy, a youngster from Hedworth Lane Primary School in Boldon Colliery, also picked up an award in the Year 5-6 Artwork Category.

The prize-giving event took place at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City , with a host of  former and current professional footballers and other special VIP guests including Chris Kamara, Jason Lee, Gordon Taylor, Dave Bennett, Gary Bennett, Trevor Sinclair, Dave Prentis & Kevin Courtney, who presented prizes to young people from schools throughout England.

The day was also hosted by CBBC presenters Alex Winters & Ben Cajee.

Show Racism the Red Card's Chief Executive, Ged Grebby, said: “The competition sees thousands of young people take part annually and it is a hard job for the judges to pick the winners from so many great entries. This year there were some wonderfully original entries and we would like to thank all of the teachers for promoting the competition in their schools.”

“SRtRC would also like to congratulate all the winners of the 2019 School Competition on their achievement. This event is a fantastic example of the hard work and commitment of thousands of young people and the enthusiasm the SRtRC campaign inspires.”
