#WontBeHomeForTea: Go retro at Wembley

The City of Sunderland #WontBeHomeForTea next weekend when the Black Cats face Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy Final.

Ahead of our trip to the national stadium, we thought we could look back at some of our previous visits to Wembley stadium…

For Sunderland, the best it has really got in modern times is the 1973 FA Cup final where we shocked the footbalingl world and beat the mighty Leeds United 1-0to take the trophy home.

Ian Porterfield netted the winner that day, but Jim Montgomery stole the headlines with a magnificent double save that still puts smiles on the faces of Mackems everywhere.

Our next FA Cup final came in 1992 in very similar circumstances. All conquering Liverpool were at the tailend of their decades of dominance and they faced second division Sunderland who nobody gave a chance.

Unlike 1973 though, Sunderland were not able to cause an upset and fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Of course, we have played at Wembley on other occasions. In 1985 we faced Norwich City in the Milk Cup final and lost 1-0 in front of 100,000 people.

In 1990 we lost to Swindon Town 1-0 which looked to have cost us promotion to the top division.

However, The Robins were not allowed to be promoted because they had been charged with breaching Football League rules - this meant that Sunderland were promoted despite losing the Wembley final.

The 1998 playoff final was arguably the greatest game to ever take place at the old Wembley, but the 4-4 draw did not end on a happy note for Sunderland fans as we lost the game on penalties.

We most recently went to Wembley for the 2014 League Cup final where we faced Manchester City.

While we lost the game 3-1, Sunderland fans will forever remember the day as a proud one as we took over the City of London.

Over the last 46 years we have not had any success at Wembley, but next weekend we have a chance to make some positive memories and come home with a trophy.
