Club news : Beacon of Light launches summer programme

The Beacon of Light will be the place to be this summer as it hosts an action-packed calendar of events throughout the six-week school holidays.

Sponsored by gentoo, Summer at the Beacon of Light, has something for everyone from toddlers, children and teenagers, through to families, adults and people aged over 55.

The Beacon of Light opened to the public in September of last year, and nearly 6,000 visitors a week use the award-winning facility to play sport, learn new skills and improve their health and wellbeing.

As well as a comprehensive range of football and multi-sport holiday courses, Summer at the Beacon of Light features brand new events including:

  • Fortneet Camp – a Mackem take on a global phenomenon, youngsters battle their friends with Nerf guns in the Beacon’s indoor arena
  • Family Fit – parent and child fitness sessions led by former SAFC Strength and Conditioning ace Scott Pearce
  • Family Fakeaway – parents and children learn how to cook healthy takeaway classics including pizza, burgers and chicken curry in the Beacon’s state-of-the-art teaching kitchen
  • Toddler Tales – each week children will read a book before baking a special treat in the Beacon kitchen

SAFC Fans and InBusiness 5-a-side leagues will continue to run throughout the summer, alongside the Extra Time Hub which provides a range of activities for over 55s, including table tennis, pilates and walking netball.

The Beacon will also host the Google Digital Garage Bus on 26th July and 3rd August, to support the community in developing their digital skills.

And if that’s not enough to keep you going, the Beacon of Light will be turned red, white and blue on Saturday 24th August when it hosts Team GB as one of the flagship events in the Nation’s Biggest Sports Day.

Speaking about the Summer at the Beacon of Light campaign, General Manager Phil King said: “This is our first summer open to the public, so we want to create something really special, really engaging and, most importantly, lots of fun.

“Summer at the Beacon of Light showcases just how versatile this brilliant building can be. We want to become a destination of choice for families in the holidays where they can get together, have fun and learn something new.

“All proceeds from the Beacon of Light are donated back to the Foundation of Light, so anyone who visits us this summer will not only feel great because they are doing something fun but because they are helping to make a real difference to lives across the north east.”
