Sunderland AFC will hold a period of applause tomorrow in memory of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Gordon Banks, who sadly passed away earlier this week aged 81.
The applause will take place on Friday evening prior to kick-off when the Lads welcome Accrington Stanley to the Stadium of Light.
Club ambassador Jimmy Montgomery, who spent time with Banks while on international duty, said: “Banksy was the best goalkeeper in my era and far beyond that.
"We spoke on numerous occasions and he was just a lovely man, and so humble.
“I always remember, I nearly got a cap for England when Banksy played up at Sunderland and got injured on the Saturday, but he played on the Wednesday, I believe it was against France.
"I think we beat them 5-0, I remember I was in the same room, which for me was absolutely awesome.
“Banksy was just phenomenal, as a goalkeeper and as a man.”
Supporters are kindly asked to take their seats early to ensure that full support is given to the tribute.
