Rest in peace, Billy: Donald pays tribute to SAFC great

Sunderland AFC are deeply saddened by the passing of 1973 FA Cup winner Billy Hughes at the age of 70.

Flags outside the Stadium of Light and Academy of Light will fly at half-mast today as the club remembers Hughes who made over 300 appearances.

Hughes' passing will also be marked next week when the Black Cats continue the long-standing tradition of observing a period of silence at the last home game of the calendar year, in memory of supporters, former players and club officials who have passed away.

Speaking about the sad news, Sunderland AFC chairman Stewart Donald said: “We are devastated by the news this morning of Billy’s passing.

“He was such a significant figure in the history of Sunderland AFC, and remembered so fondly for his contribution to the famous 1973 Cup Final victory.

“Our thoughts today are with Billy’s family and friends and we send our love and support to all of the members of our 1973 team, who will feel the loss of their former team-mate so deeply.”
