Sunderland AFC’s ‘Big Seat Change’ has been shortlisted at this year’s Football Business Awards.
The nomination comes after the summer-long project was embraced by supporters and received widespread coverage by both local and national media.
Over 3,000 fans answered the call to come together and literally rebuild the club they love in more ways than one, as Sunderland AFC embarked on a Big Seat Change event.
The initiative became the first step in reconnecting fans and working towards improving the appearance of the Stadium of Light.
Supporters travelled from as far as Bristol, Dover and France, with hundreds taking time off work to join staff at the Stadium of Light to replace the faded pink seats and revamp the home of SAFC.
To sum up, fan Paul Luke said it best: “It seems a small thing, but the pink seats are a visual reminder of our stagnation and lack of care. Having red seats again will be a real boost to morale and a symbol of change.”
This is the second successive year the club has made the Football Business Awards shortlist, after scooping the gong for Best Fan Engagement following the innovative home kit launch ahead of the 2017-18 season.
The Football Business Awards recognise and reward the hard work that takes place in supporting the success of the game.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in November.
