On this day: Rewriting the history books

On this day in 1999, Sunderland sent records tumbling thanks to a 2-1 win over Birmingham City on the final day of the season.

In between pre-match fireworks and the post-match trophy presentation, Peter Reid’s champions rewrote the history books to take their points tally to a record-breaking 105.

Birmingham led at the break after Martin Grainger found the net, but Kevin Phillips’ 25th goal of the season levelled matters before Niall Quinn’s 21st – and Sunderland’s 91st – secured three points.

The result ensured the Lads took 60 points from a possible 69 at home, as their 31st victory – a divisional record – was secured in front of a packed-out Stadium of Light.

Also on this day: Sunderland were beaten in the FA Cup final by Liverpool in 1992.
