On this day: Sbragia steps down in '09

On this day in 2009, Ricky Sbragia stood down as Sunderland manager following the end of the season.

The Scot first arrived on Wearside in 1994 as youth team coach and later took charge of the reserves, but he departed in 2002 to take up the same role at Manchester United.

After developing United’s future first-team stars, including Darren Fletcher, Sbragia was appointed first-team coach at Bolton Wanderers but just six months later he returned to Wearside.

Following Roy Keane’s departure in December 2008, he was appointed caretaker manager and he went on to sign an 18-month contract following big wins over West Bromwich Albion and Hull City.

Sbragia guided the Lads to safety on the final day of the campaign as Middlesbrough and Newcastle United dropped into the second tier, but he called time on his spell as manager immediately after the final whistle.

He remained at the club as chief scout until April 2011, and went on to work within Scotland’s youth set-up before taking charge of Man Utd’s under-23s in July 2017.

Also on this day: Sunderland’s 1969 FA Youth Cup winning captain, Keith Coleman, was born in Washington.
