On this day: Connor makes Scotland debut

On this day in 1930, Jimmy Connor made his Scotland debut in a 2-0 win over France in Paris.

The outside left made his Sunderland bow the same year during a 3-3 draw with Manchester City, and he would go on to spend nine years at Roker Park.

Born in Renfrew, Connor made 254 league appearances for the Lads, scoring 49 goals, with the best coming when he struck the winner in a 5-4 win over reigning champions Arsenal in December 1935.

The outside left crowed a stunning run with a majestic long-range finish, and six months later the Lads would lift the title.

Connor’s latter years with the club were thwarted by injury and he was forced to miss the Lads’ 1937 FA Cup triumph, but he remains one of the great players to pull on the famous red and white.

Also on this day: Sunderland signed Nicolas Medina from Argentinos Juniors for £3.5m.
