SoL turns red and white: Donald hails Sunderland supporters

The first phase of the Stadium of Light’s face-lift has been completed, with 10,000 seats replaced ahead of the new season.

In total, over 31,000 seats are set to be renewed and the first phase of the project has seen the north-east and south-east corners replaced.

Supporters were encouraged to be part of the project to spruce up the SoL, and over 1,000 of them have worked alongside the stadium’s maintenance team to help with the process over the last nine days.

Stewart Donald, who joined in on the final day of the first phase of installation, hailed their involvement.

“What a fantastic effort it has been from the supporters,” said the chairman.

“We have had people in their 80s join us, and even someone who travelled from Holland, so I can’t thank them enough.”

He continued: “I would also like to give a big hand to our team of staff, who have worked tirelessly to get the project off the ground while making sure everything has been done properly.

“It is great to see the stadium starting to return to its former glory, and I’m delighted that our fans have been able to play such an important part in helping us do this.”

The remaining 20,000 seats will be replaced in the coming months.
