End of an era: Sorensen hangs up his boots

Former Black Cat Thomas Sorensen has announced his retirement from football.

The goalkeeper started his career in his native Denmark, featuring for local side Odense BK before spending time on loan at Vejle Boldklub and Svendborg.

In 1998 the Dane moved to Sunderland and he would gone on to make almost 200 appearances on Wearside, while also helping the Black Cats to successive seventh-place Premier League finishes.

And none will ever forget his penalty-saving heroics against Alan Shearer in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Sorensen also turned out for Aston Villa and Stoke City during a 17-year stay in English football, with a spell in the A-League with Melbourne City wrapping up an impressive career.

The 41-year-old announced his retirement in Instagram, posting his thanks to all who have helped him over the years.

“It's with great pride and a little bit of sadness, that I today officially announce my retirement from professional football.

“It's been an amazing journey with so many people to thank. Family, friends, clubs, coaches, players and fans...THANK YOU.”

He added: “I will be forever grateful for your support.

“Now the time has come to reflect and then start a new chapter in my life. Something I am really looking forward to.”
