Sunderland Under-18s were defeated 3-1 in the U18 Premier League at the Academy of Light.
The Black Cats took the lead midway through the first-half when Trey Ogunsuyi held of his man to turn and slot the ball into the bottom corner.
The Citizens currently sit second in the league and went into the game nine unbeaten.
Ben Wilkinson's side asserted their dominance in the second-half with goals from Ashton Muir, Matthew Warhurst and Brooklyn Feuba sealing the victory for the visitors.
The Lads next travel to Nottingham Forest at the beginning of April.
