Match preview: U21s host Aston Villa

SAFC Under-21s will continue their Premier League 2 campaign on Monday evening against Aston Villa at Eppleton CW (KO 7pm).

John Hewitson will continue to lead the team after overseeing their pre-season tour of the US, which concluded with three successive victories.

The trip to North America also coincided with the club's PL2 opener at Norwich City, which saw several Under-18s impress in a 3-2 defeat against an experienced Canaries side.

Team news

Sunderland's ranks will be bolstered following their return to the UK, but several of the Under-18s will be hoping to continue their involvement after a stellar showing on opening day.

Summer signings Max Thompson, Cal Wilson, Owen Robinson and Tom Chiabi could make their respective debuts for the Under-21s, but Conor Pye will be unavailable for selection.

The defender is continuing to build his fitness following a move from Morecambe, with Ben Crompton also set to miss out due to injury.

Last time out

Villa saw a three-goal lead slip through their grasp against Middlesbrough on opening day at Bodymoor Heath.

Netherlands international Anwar El Ghazi notched an assist for Tyreik Wright’s opener before netting a free-kick, with Brad Young making it 3-0 before the half-time whistle.

Boro responded following the restart, though, fighting back to claim a point by scoring three times in 12 second-half minutes through Sam Collins, Calum Kavangh and Bryant Bilongo.
