Loan moves: Patterson and Wilding depart

Sunderland AFC goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has returned to Notts County on loan until the end of the season, with fellow academy graduate Sam Wilding also sealing a temporary switch.

Patterson spent 10 games at Meadow Lane earlier this campaign and produced several eye-catching performances before being recalled to the Stadium of Light.

The 21–year-old academy graduate has also made four first-team appearances for the Lads this season, keeping a clean sheet on his league debut in a victory over AFC Wimbledon in August.

The goalkeeper will be available for selection on Sunday when County face Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham, as the Magpies look to continue their promotion charge.

Midfielder Wilding has also departed on loan, joining Leamington FC until 5 February 2022.

The 21-year-old has made seven appearances for the Under-23s during the current season, whilst also featuring for Lee Johnson’s side in the Papa John’s Trophy on one occasion.

Kristjaan Speakman said: “Anthony was doing extremely well at Meadow Lane before injuries dictated that he needed to be recalled, but we retained an open dialogue with Notts County and they have been fully supportive throughout this process. Although there were alternative moves on the table, we believe this remains the best fit to ensure Anthony’s development continues. Likewise, we were conscious about the need for Sam to gain more minutes and valuable experience in a competitive senior environment, so this is an excellent opportunity for him to progress. We retain a recall option on both players to ensure we are fully protected in continually uncertain times.”
