'I can't wait to get going now': Sam Wilding following his move to Wearside

Sunderland midfielder Sam Wilding insists he can’t wait to get going after swapping the West Midlands for the North East.

The 20-year-old signed for the Lads after leaving West Brom and will link up with Elliott Dickman’s Under-23 side this season.

And speaking to safc.com, he revealed his excitement following his arrival on Wearside.

“I’m really pleased to sign for a club the size of Sunderland,” Wilding said.

“When the opportunity for a trial came up before lockdown it was a no brainer to come here, and when they offered me a contract, I couldn’t say no.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks in pre-season after a long time without football, but I feel like I’m settling in now.

“I already think there’s a strong relationship with myself and the coaches, which should really benefit me going forwards.”

Wilding was part of the Baggies’ academy for 12 years, and also spent time on loan with National League side Leamington FC in 2019.

And he believes his experiences there will help him push on with the Black Cats this term.

“West Brom has been my life, so it’s been weird being up here,” he continued.

“There’s new challenges now with living away from home and meeting new people, but I think they will really help my game a lot and help me grow as a person.

“Physically, my move to Leamington helped me a lot and hopefully I can take that into my game this season.

“I can’t wait to get going now and show what I can do.”
