Match report: U18s suffer derby heartache

Sunderland U18s 1-2 Newcastle United U18s

Sunderland under-18s suffered late heartbreak in a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday in the Premier League.

The Black Cats took the lead just after the interval through Josh Baggs and had a number of chances to double their advantage and put the game to bed.

But Josh Harrison’s goal in the 89th minute, before Dylan Stephenson’s stoppage-time winner sealed the derby day victory for the Magpies.

Paul Bryson was forced to name a side made up of mainly first-year scholars due to a hefty injury list.

Sunderland dominated the opening stages of the game and created their first chance on 12 minutes when Jonathan Krakue intercepted a sloppy Newcastle pass and threaded in Cole Kiernan, who saw his long-range effort saved by Will Brown.

The hosts threatened again minutes later when Krakue slipped in McKenzie Dicicco, but his shot on the angle was expertly parried wide.

The Magpies were clinging on going into the break and Sunderland’s pressure finally paid off just after.

In the 50th minute, Baggs found space in the Newcastle six-yard box and nodded home from Ryan Wombwell’s well taken free kick.

Kiernan almost doubled the Lads’ lead with their next attack, but his 20-yard effort drifted just wide.

Newcastle slowly grew into the game without really testing Adam Cameron in the Sunderland net until the 89th minute, when the Black Cats keeper could only parry the ball into the path of Harrison who tapped in from close range.

And it got worse for the hosts just moments later when Stephenson powered home from close range to snatch all three points in the mini Wear-Tyne derby at the Academy of Light.
