Match preview: U23s set for Durham County Challenge Cup tie

Sunderland under-23s host Boldon CA tonight in the Durham County Challenge Cup at Eppleton CW, kick-off 7:30pm.

Elliot Dickman’s side produced a five-star showing in the previous round, defeating Washington 5-1 at New Ferens Park.

And after the Lads secured a point away to Huddersfield Town on Monday night, Dickman believes the game provides a perfect platform to start an unbeaten run.

“The Huddersfield game was a positive for us, it was great to get a clean sheet and hopefully we can build on that now,” he said.

“I’ve been pleased with the performances on the whole, we have a genuine set of lads who work hard for each other.

“We’ve already played Washington in this competition and won so I’m hoping we can do so again in this round.

“We want to go and win every game and the Boldon game is no different, sometimes this season we’ve been narrowly beaten by a bit of quality from certain individuals.

“This game is also an opportunity for some of the lads who maybe haven’t featured enough to get some game time and hopefully be the start of a good run for us as a team.”

Dickman also reserved praise for towering centre back, Andrias Edmundson who made his first start of the season in the draw at Huddersfield.

“I was delighted with Andrias, he’s missed quite a bit through injury after picking up a bad one with the under-18s and having a couple of knocks,” he continued.

“Monday was an ideal opportunity to give him some game time, especially with Brandon Taylor with the first team.

“He did smashing, he should be really pleased and go into international duty with the Faroe Islands full of confidence.”
