Premier League 2: U23s to host Reading

Elliott Dickman insists his under-23's side must start taking their chances if they are to claim their first Premier League 2 win of the season on Sunday against Reading.

The lads lost 4-0 at Fulham last time out but missed a host of chances that could have turned the game around with the score at 1-0.

“We definitely did enough to get something out of the game, particularly in the second half,” Dickman said.

“Once they got their third it did deflate us, but I was delighted with the way we responded after half time to come out and attack like we did.

“The game is about creating chances and we did that; we’ve created chances in the majority of our games, so we need to take a little bit more care with the finish at times.”

The development team will be without Jake Hackett for the clash with the Royals, after the midfielder secured a loan move to Bet Victor Northern Premier Side, Whitby Town.

“The good thing for Jake is that he’s out there playing men’s football, which is what we wanted for him,” Dickman continued.

“We’ve got a number of lads who can play in centre midfield, so I’m delighted we’ve been able to get Jake out on loan.”

The visitors come into the game in poor form, having won just once in their previous six games, but the under-23s boss is expecting a difficult test against an experienced Reading side.

“It will be a tough game for us; they have some very good players and played a lot of first team lads in their previous game against Aston Villa,” he added.

“If they bring a few first team players it will be a good test, but a great experience for the lads as well.

“In almost every game we’ve played our attitude and application has been fantastic, we just need to find that bit of quality on the ball and if we can do that, hopefully we’ll start picking up positive results.”
