U23 match preview: Lads set for PLCup trip to Everton

Sunderland under-23s are in Premier League Cup action tomorrow night when they head to Everton.

Elliott Dickman’s young Black Cats travel will travel to Southport FC’s Merseyrail Community Stadium for a 7pm kick-off, bidding to advance into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Standing in their way, though, are an Everton side who are unbeaten in the competition this term after finishing top of group B with 14 points from a possible 18.

WHAT HE SAID – BENJI KIMPIOKA

Ahead of the match, safc.com caught up with Swedish youth international, Benji Kimpioka, after his strike last Friday against Manchester United almost handed the young Black Cats three precious Premier League 2 points.

“When you look at players who have come through the levels at Sunderland and reached the first team in recent years - you want to prove to yourself and to the people that you can do it too and be better even than them. That is the mentality I have in football. I just have to keep on working hard every day and see where it takes me.”

EYES ON THE OPP – EVERTON U23

Undefeated in the Premier League Cup so far this term, Everton head into Saturday’s tie riding high on the crest of a wave. Four points clear at the top of the Premier League 2 tree, the Toffees are seven games unbeaten having recorded a goalless draw in their last match at home to Arsenal after taking maximum points off Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers.

*Please note, due to adverse weather conditions this tie was moved from Saturday 16 March.
