U23: Dickman on Man United draw

Elliott Dickman was pleased with his side’s performance against Manchester United but was disappointed not to get all three points at the Stadium of Light on Friday.

Benji Kimpioka handed Sunderland advantage on 36 minutes when Jack Diamond won the ball high up the pitch, drove into the box and squared it for the Swedish youth international to turn and finish.

But the visitors struck back inside the final 10 minutes to steal a point through Largie Ramazani, who touched home a low cross from the right.

Speaking to safc.com post-match, Dickman shared his frustrations but highlighted many of the positives as the Black Cats issued a response to Monday’s defeat at Aston Villa.

“It was similar to Monday night, we played well and tonight we got our goal,” he said. “I am disappointed we didn’t get all three points, but I am happy overall.

“I thought Benji was smashing just like everyone else. He did his role on the team, worked hard and I was pleased with some of the things he did.

“His link up play and his forward movement were great. You said he had the bit between the teeth which he did and that was good. He is a handful to play against, but like I say there was a number of other lads who were just as good.”

“Jack done really well, he was good going forward and he created some good chances and played on the front foot. He has learnt a lot about the other side of the game and that is still something he needs to improve on but he knows that.

“We have been working with him all season and he has gotten better. To move up the pecking order he needs to make sure he is performing consistently.”
