Academy: Nelson progress pleases Dickman

It’s often highlighted at academy football that when your chance comes along you have to be ready to take it.

Andrew Nelson moved out on loan at the start of January for his second spell away from Sunderland this season after a short 28-day spell at Vanarama National League North side Harrogate Town.

The striker joined Scottish Championship club Falkirk on a deal which will see him remain north of the border until the end of the season, linking up with former Black Cats full-back Tommy Robson.

And while the youngster continues to settle in to his new surroundings in Scotland, he has made a bright start having provided two assists in their recent 6-1 victory over promotion hopefuls Dundee United last weekend.

“Andrew has been chomping at the bit to get another loan,” explained Dickman who shared his delight over Nelson’s hunger and desire.

“He went out on loan last season at Hartlepool United and now he is on loan up at Falkirk.

“I am delighted for him to have set two goals up, it is a shame he didn’t score.

“Fair play he is out there learning and playing against men,” he continued.

“The lads who came in against Derby County, Rees Greenwood played up front – that isn’t his usual position – but he has done great.

“I have singled ones out but the whole side were really good against Derby.”
