Under-23 preview: Dickman on Chelsea test

Elliott Dickman is expecting a real battle when Sunderland under-23s entertain Chelsea on Sunday.

The young Black Cats were without a number of key players last weekend, but they rose to the occasion to overcome an experienced Derby County side.

Just one point separates the two sides heading into today’s match-up at Eppleton CW (KO 12pm).

But despite their similar league position, Dickman expects the Blues to provide a big challenge.

“They don’t come much tougher than Chelsea,” said the under-23 boss.

“Their reputation as an academy is very good and they’ve got some very talented players, so it will be a tough test but if we show the same spirit we did last weekend it should be a good game.”

He continued: “I thought we were terrific last weekend against an experienced side.

“We were delighted with our performance and the way we played, so we have to keep building on that this weekend.

“The resources Chelsea have are incredible and I would class them as a ‘super club’ when it comes to their pool of players and budget – they resources seem to be unlimited – so when you come up against teams like that we just have to be what we are.

“We are a genuine side and the players give their all, they are very honest and on our day we can play some good stuff, so let’s have a good day with the ball and make it tough for Chelsea.”
