Foundation of Light: First girls Futsal tournament hosted

Oxclose Academy and St Bedes RC Comprehensive were victorious in Foundation of Light's inaugural EFL Girls Futsal Tournament on Friday.

More than 60 youngsters from schools across the North East competed in the event at Hetton School, with many experiencing the sport for the first time.

St Bedes, based in Peterlee, won the U15 section on goal difference from St Wilfrids RC College (South Shields) while there was an all-Oxclose derby in the U13 final with the schools' 'B' team overcoming the 'A' side 2-0.

The winners now advance to the EFL Regional Finals where they will face teams representing other Championship clubs.

Holly and Ellie, who represented hosts Hetton U15s, said: "We've really enjoyed the tournament as it's been a great opportunity to play against other teams.

"We've played Futsal before, with Foundation of Light at school, and it's a lot quicker. Very different to 11-a-side!"

Foundation Sport and Play Delivery Coach Caroline Ames, who is based at the Hetton School added: "We received funding from the Football Foundation to purchase Futsal goals, bibs, balls and other equipment which has allowed us to host the tournament here today.

"Futsal is more skill based so it's about getting the girls to keep the ball under control, use both feet and transfer these skills across to football as well."

Futsal is the world’s fastest growing indoor sport, showcases close ball skills, increased touches, quick decision making, creativity and tactical nous. Some of the world’s leading football stars, such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, honed their ball skills with futsal.

The free-flowing game has witnessed significant growth throughout England and Wales over recent years, as a sport in its own right and as a fundamental part of football development.

Helen Byrne, Foundation of Light's Premier League Primary Stars Events Coordinator, said: "Today's tournament has been a huge success. It was brilliant to see the girls playing futsal, trying a different sport and learning new skills.

"There was a great atmosphere at the event and all the players couldn’t wait to get on the pitch. We look forward to running similar tournaments in the future."

Thank you to Farringdon Community Academy, Hetton School, Oxclose Community Academy, St Wilfrids RC College and Wellfield School for taking part in the tournament.
