Match preview: U23s welcome Stoke City for opener

Elliott Dickman is itching to get started tonight as Sunderland under-23s kick-off their campaign against Stoke City.

The Black Cats welcome the Potters to Eppleton Colliery Welfare this evening, kick-off 7pm, as they begin their Premier League 2 season.

Having come through pre-season unscathed and undefeated, the under-23s boss is hopeful the positive signs off the field can filter down as he looks to hit the ground running with three points.

“Naturally, some of the under-18s have stepped up - people like Williams Kokolo, Jacob Young and Robbie Dunne,” he said.

“We have brought in Jack Bainbridge and Jordan Hunter to go alongside the likes of Alex Storey and Brandon Taylor.

“It has been different, but it has been good, the facilities here are first class and the games we have had have been challenging.

“One or two have been comfortable but the lads have worked hard on and off the field. The standard has been fantastic, the discipline is very good, and they come together well as a team.

“It feels like we are on track and making good progress, but you won’t know ‘til we rock up against Stoke City.”
