Academy: Youngsters ease past Magpies

Newcastle United U18 0-3 Sunderland U18

Sunderland's youngsters pulled off a great away win by beating rivals Newcastle on Tyneside.

One up at the break, the young Black Cats exhibited a masterclass in counter-attacking to put the hosts to the sword twice more and wrap up victory.

The scoresheet showed three different scorers, while at the other end Anthony Patterson was in great form to keep the Magpies at bay.

After both sides cancelled each other in the early running, Sunderland took the lead 15 minutes in with a well-worked goal as Bali Mumba pulled the ball back for Benji Kimpioka to convert.

Meanwhile Patterson pulled off a key save one-on-one to retain the lead going into the break, allowing the visitors to counter-punch in the second half.

They looked consistently dangerous on the break and got their rewards when Kimpioka was felled in the box and Lee Connelly tucked home from the spot.

A Jake Hackett strike saw the lead further extended to put the icing on a good day for the youngsters.

Coach Mark Atkinson was pleased with his side's performance as they secured a first clean sheet of the campaign.

"We did pretty much everything right in the game," he said. "The lads' attitude and desire was excellent and getting that first clean sheet was pleasing.

"The players worked hard and got what they deserved."
