Interview: Embleton on Porto

Elliot Embleton has called for his team-mates to hold their nerve when they host Porto in the International Cup final tonight, kick-off 7pm.

Over 20,000 fans are set to descend to the Stadium of Light, with the development team bidding to etch their names in the club’s history books.

Impressive displays against Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Athletic Club and Norwich City earned the Lads their final berth, and now Embleton, who has scored two goals in this year’s competition, is keen to overcome the final hurdle.

Speaking to safc.com, the 18-year-old echoed the thoughts of coach Elliott Dickman to have no regrets, insisting his team-mates must stand up and be counted.

“I just can’t wait for the evening to come round now and hopefully we will win,” he said.

“It will be the biggest crowd I have played in front of. I have been on the bench with the first-team but to be able to play in front of 20,000 is so much different.

“We have worked hard for it all season. We have beaten some good teams along the way and to be the only under-23s team left in England to get to a European final is unbelievable.

“Everyone is excited, we are all ready for the game and now it is up to us to make sure we deliver on the big stage.”
