Premier League 2: Asoro nominated for Player of the Year accolade

Joel Asoro has been shortlisted for the Premier League 2 player of the year accolade.

The 17-year-old, who made his Premier League debut in August against Middlesbrough, is one of 10 top-flight youngsters to be nominated for the accolade.

Last month the Swedish under-21 international was shortlisted for the prestigious European Golden Boy crown, a prize once famously collected by Paul Pogba and five-time Fifa Ballon D'or winner Lionel Messi.

Asoro has enjoyed a first-team breakthrough campaign on Wearside, rising from the under-18s side last term and into the senior frame over the course of July, August and September in 2016.

Besides that, though, the pacey striker has been a regular in the development side and played a vital role in helping them reach the club’s first-ever International Cup final.

Scorer of the all-important International Cup goal at Norwich City, Asoro sent the Lads soaring into the final which they eventually lost to Portuguese giants FC Porto.

As a reward for his fine efforts, Asoro has been listed for the Premier League 2 player of the season along with Southampton’s Josh Sims, Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell and Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe.

The following players are up for the accolade:

Mason Mount, Chelsea

Liam Walsh, Everton

Axel Tuanzebe, Manchester United

Todd Cantwell, Norwich City

Josh Sims, Southampton

Joel Asoro, Sunderland

Oliver McBurnie, Swansea City

Domingos Quina, West Ham United

Marcus Browne, West Ham United

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpoool
