Academy: Kimpioka confident results will come

Ben Kimpioka has hailed positivity as key, insisting the pendulum will swing in Sunderland under-18s’ favour if they continue to work in the same manner they have done.

The Swedish youngster has been frustrated in recent weeks along with the rest of the young Black Cats, losing back-to-back matches in their Premier League merit group.

Chances have been aplenty, though, as the Black Cats have dominated games against both Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, the youth team have fallen foul of not taking their chances and as a result have paid the ultimate price, conceding three against the Magpies and one in the closing stages to Wolves.

With the international break now in full swing, Kimpioka has called for his team-mates to remain upbeat and believe they can turn things around at Leicester City in 11 days time.

“Teams have moments when they can’t score and we’re having one of those moments now,” he said.

“We’re creating chances but obviously we need to start taking them if we are to win games.

“Mark Atkinson has been positive after the two games because the stats show that we have been dominant and we have been better than our opponents.

“We need to take our chances now, though, we have played well but haven’t got the rewards we deserve,” he continued.

“Eventually things will change for us but we need to keep applying ourselves as we are.”
