Game by game: Casey enjoying life in the development team

Dan Casey is enjoying the trials and tribulations of life in Sunderland under-23s’ squad.

In July 2016 the Republic of Ireland defender made the leap from youth team football as he completed his two-year scholar.

With international recognition throughout Ireland’s under-15, under-16 and under-17 level, the 18-year-old has bedded into the development team this term, making eight appearances so far.

While just two of those have been starts, Casey has told safc.com he is relishing overcoming the hurdles as he continues to settle into Elliott Dickman’s side.

“I have enjoyed getting some minutes under my belt in the under-23s team this season,” he said.

“It has been tough this season but apart from a couple of results I think as a team we have done quite well.

“We just need to keep going and striving for better each and every day in training and on a matchday.”

He continued: “I want to play more often and hopefully I will be able to do that between now and the end of the season.”
