U18s Preview: We must be more clinical, says Atkinson

Mark Atkinson has tasked his players with turning their dominant display at Newcastle United into three points this Saturday against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The youth team suffered a frustrating outing to Tyneside last Saturday, losing 3-0 to their Tyne-Wear rivals despite enjoying the better of the game.

Lee Connelly missed a penalty while his team-mates saw further chances kept out by the post and crossbar as the Black Cats drew a blank, and ultimately paid the price at the other end.

However, following a positive weeks training at the Academy of Light, Atkinson has stated last weekend’s result provides his team with a learning curve that will benefit his players in their final six matches of the season.

“Last weekend was a really pleasing performance for us in regards to being on the ball,” he admitted.

“That said, we need to be more ruthless and take the chances we create because we had a lot of chances and that was probably the most we had created all season in a game.

“We didn’t take them, though, and ultimately Newcastle were a bit more ruthless than us.

“It was a massive lesson for us to dominant the game as much as we did and come away with nothing, not even a goal, is a learning curve for them,” he continued.

“It is one they have got to put right this weekend but nevertheless it will be another tough test.”
