On the right track: Atkinson seeks more of the same

Mark Atkinson has urged for more of the same from his players ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leicester City.

Sunderland under-18s head to the East Midlands this weekend without a win in two games following back-to-back defeats.

Having conceded four goals in those losses - to Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers - the young Black Cats racked up an astonishing 50 attempts in those matches, however, most importantly though, have failed to score.

With a long-awaited return of the Premier League now on the horizon, Atkinson believes if his players continues to perform to the level they have done, then eventually the pendulum will swing in their favour.

“We have just got to keep doing what we are doing because our performances have been really good,” he said.

“We just need to make sure we maintain our positive nature and the big thing remains that we need to put our chances away.

“In terms of the messages it is just a case of keep doing what we are doing.

“We have worked hard over the last week or so and we are now ready for the test Leicester pose,” he continued.

“The players need confidence to grow and develop, especially when it comes to taking their chances.

“Lee (Connelly) has been great for us all season but he is mindful that he is in a bit of a drought when it comes to the number of games he hasn’t scored in.

“If we continue to play in the manner we are then eventually the chances go in – we just need to continue doing what we are doing.”
