Under-23 reaction: Dickman satisfied by win

Elliott Dickman was satisfied with his side’s display against Barnsley on Friday afternoon.

Sunderland under-23s were pushed all the way but just about did enough to edge out a close encounter 2-1 at the Academy of Light.

Max Stryjek was the busier of the two keepers in the first-half and did well to keep the scores level until the 48th minute when Romal Palmer produced moment of magic inside the area to give the visitors the lead.

But Dickman’s side rose to the occasion as the second period wore on and goals from Ethan Robson and Benji Kimpioka ensured the Black Cats’ secured their second win in pre-season.

Speaking to safc.com, Dickman delivered his assessment on the pre-season friendly.

“It was good in some way because it was another 90 minutes for the lads,” he said.

“I don’t think we played particularly great because there were bits one or two individuals did quite well.

“In pre-season, there is always plenty to improve on. We scored two goals but it is just another game and a good chance for the Lads to get some minutes in their legs.

“It helps with confidence if we win but I also think the basics of running around and getting to know the patterns of play we are trying to develop are just as important,” he continued.

“It is vital they do that as well as develop on the physical aspects of the game.”
