Flying high: Hume praises U23s performance

Denver Hume praised his team-mates after Sunderland under-23s returned to winning ways over Cardiff City on Sunday.

Andy Welsh’s side were smooth running throughout and led 2-0 at the break, courtesy of goals from Rees Greenwood and Tom Beadling.

However, it could’ve and probably should’ve been more after Ethan Robson saw his rifled strike cannon off the foot of the post and Greenwood had a strike hooked clear off the line.

Hume replaced Swedish international Joel Asoro at the midway interval, and could’ve also chalked his name on the score board had he have kept his effort down.

Most importantly though, the lads held out to secure victory which moves them four points clear at the top of Group C in the Premier League Cup.

“It was great to get a win against Cardiff,” he said. “The lads played really well in the first-half and it was great to see.

“They moved it quickly, played some great stuff and Rees and Tommy got the goals to put us in control at the break.

“We created a lot of chances and that was good to see because it has been a challenging week with a lot of travelling involved,” he continued.

“We have picked up two clean sheets – against Derby and Cardiff – so that’s also great to see because we want to score goals and we want to keep them out as well.”
