Fast and furious: Connelly plots Shrewsbury win

Lee Connelly is targeting a fast start when Sunderland’s under-18s host Shrewsbury Town in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening.

The Black Cats produced a ruthless display to dispatch Burton Albion in the third round, with Connelly netting on the way to a thrilling 4-2 win.

Elliott Dickman’s side did fall behind, though, with Charlie Dowd opening scoring before Josh Maja’s double turn the tie on it's head.

And the striker urged his team-mates to start fast and avoid having to come from behind against the Shrews.

“Overall, we need to reproduce what we did last time, but hopefully we can get off to a better start because we know we weren't at it in the opening minutes and that ultimately saw us go behind.

“After we settled we played well so we need to make sure we play like that from the start this time around.”

He continued: “We want to progress in the cup and go as far as we can.

“We’ve been getting better and better and we want to continue that form 2017, but we’ve been training well and we’re confident we can pick up where we left off.

“I’m pleased with my goals so far this season because as a striker that’s the most important thing for me, so hopefully I can keep that going and add to my tally against Shrewsbury."
