Robson on Pickford: He's an inspiration to every youngster

Ethan Robson has praised Jordan Pickford following his nomination for PFA Young Player of the Year, admitting he is an inspiration to every academy player at Sunderland.

The young Lions stopper has enjoyed a mesmeric rise over the last 18 months, cementing his place between the sticks in David Moyes’ side.

Unfazed by the high-pressure environment, Pickford has dazzled in the bright lights of the Premier League and has a received host of awards and plaudits which has even led him into contention for England’s senior squad.

The 23-year-old has remained firmly grounded, though, and has since been further rewarded for his efforts by being nominated along with five others for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Also vying for the accolade are Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Spurs’ England duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

But midfielder Robson has a reserved special mention for the Washington-born stopper, highlighting his prowess and journey from Wearside to England.

“I went to the same school as Jordan and I suppose you could say I look up to him,” he said.

“He has done some great things in the game at such a young age and he is doing really well for Sunderland.

“As a youngster I have just got to keep believing (that I can go on to achieve the kind of things Jordan has) and hopefully that will be me one day.”
