Moving forward: Woud pleased by improvements

Michael Woud feels Sunderland under-18s are moving in the right direction after securing back-to-back draws.

The young Black Cats have suffered heartache in their last two fixtures as Everton came from behind to snatch a point before Manchester United inflicted a similar fate on Elliott Dickman's side.

Keen to bounce back from the frustration endured at Finch Farm, the youth team began the game brightly at table-toppers Manchester United as Woud’s long clearance downfield wasn’t dealt with by the hosts and that allowed Lee Connelly the chance to steal in and put the visitors in front in the opening period.

However, from there on United laid siege on the Black Cats goal and snatched a last-gasp leveller to ensure the points were split.

Speaking to safc.com the New Zealand stopper admitted while it’s been frustrating to concede late goals, there have been plenty of encouraging signs to build on.

“It is disappointing because we were 1-0 up for most of the game and they didn’t create too many chances,” he said.

“The chances they did make we dealt with well and while we were hanging on towards the end I still felt we were going to get the three points.

“It’s a good point on reflection and when you look at the positives we are now two games undefeated.”

He continued: “We want to get our first win this weekend but what is important is that we continued to pick up points.

“We are training well and all the lads feel confident that after picking up two points in as many games, it’s all about getting that complete performance now so we end up with three points at the end of 90 minutes.”
