Reaction: Dickman takes positives from draw

Elliott Dickman has praised Sunderland under-18s after they secured a point at league-leaders Manchester United on Saturday.

Lee Connelly scored his fourth goal in two games as he latched onto Michael Woud’s long ball over the top before slotting home in the opening period.

The young Black Cats continued to pile forward and had a host of chances but failed to make their pressure pay as United levelled in the closing stages to earn a point.

Speaking to safc.com the under-18s coach admitted he was delighted with his side’s effort despite surrendering their lead late on.

“We played really well and our game plan was working,” he said.

“We created some chances and we frustrated them so it was pleasing.

“The last 10-15 minutes was relentless pressure from them but we worked hard and we were looking good until the last minute when they equalised in the last minute.”

He continued: “I have to praise the players because we worked tirelessly and their attitude and commitment was very, very pleasing.

“Although we were disappointed to concede in the last minute we were very pleased with the performance, the work ethic and the attitude of the players.

“There is still plenty to work on for our next game but we need to just keep working away, tidy up on a few things and make sure when we do get some chances we take them.”
