Reaction: Woud hails team-mates

Michael Woud has heralded his team-mates after they clinched their first win of the season last Saturday.

Lee Connelly handed Sunderland under-18s the lead on 12 minutes, however, it wasn’t all plain sailing from there.

Woud was busy in goal as he made a string of fine stops to preserve the Black Cats’ lead while Alex Storey was also to thank as he made a number of decisive blocks inside the area.

But Elliott Dickman’s side managed to withstand the brunt of Wolves’ onslaught and hold on to clinch a hard fought three points in the U18 Premier League at the Academy of Light.

The result sees the Lads close the gap on Wolves to four points as they look to climb the table.

Speaking to safc.com New Zealand stopper Woud paid tribute to his team-mates’ performance, admitting determination and character were key.

“There was a good atmosphere after the game with all the lads and coaches because finally all the hard work has paid off,” he said.

"It was a big relief that we got that win because we've been after it for so long.

“It comes down to hard work and believing that we were going to get the result.

“We always knew that we had the ability but we just needed to put it into a 90 minute performance and we managed to do that this time and it paid off.

“It was good to get the clean sheet and I felt that we deserved it,” he continued.

“We defended well through the game and I felt the whole team contributed to getting the clean sheet. It was especially pleasing for our back five because at the end of the day that's what we get judged on.”
