Winning mentality: Dickman keen to breed confidence

Elliott Dickman believes a positive mindset is key ahead of Sunderland under-18s' latest test against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday.

The young Black Cats have found life tough so far in the U18 Premier League and remain bottom, still chasing their first win of the campaign.

Having amassed two points from their opening 12 fixtures, Dickman has shared his frustrations but is adamant his youthful side have made improvements and is hopeful they can turn a corner when Wolves visit the Academy of Light on Saturday.

The under-18s boss has also told safc.com his players need to believe in their ability and have the courage to put behind them their disappointing start to the season.

“We have lacked physicality in key positions,” he said. “It’s not ideal but from what I have seen during the week it has been pleasing and really positive.

“I can see the lads making progress and I believe that is really important.

“We want to tick the last box now and get a result on Saturday because that would give us a huge reward and allow the players to see they are improving.

“The players have to believe in what they do,” he continued.

“They have to believe in their ability and they have to keep digging, keep soul searching and hopefully they will be stronger from this poor run of results they are experiencing.”
