U23s: Welsh on Robson's return

Andy Welsh reserved a special mention for Ethan Robson following the midfielder's goalscoring return to action on Monday night at the King Power Stadium.

Sunderland under-23s came from behind twice at Leicester City, courtesy of goals from George Honeyman, before Robson lashed home a 25-yard free-kick in the final moments.

It was a mesmeric way to for the young Black Cats to seal their first victory in the Premier League 2, and speaking post-match the development coach talked up the ability of Robson following after a spell on the treatment table.

“We were excellent in every department,” he smiled. “We went behind twice but we showed fantastic resilience, good organisation and the three goals were really well deserved.

“The game plan was to frustrate Leicester because they had a couple of senior players in their squad. We all knew when we got the ball in attacking or midfield areas we could keep it because our passing was excellent.”

He continued: “Ethan’s goal was a wonder strike and he has an absolute wand of a left foot. He has trained with the first team and has been excellent, but we have got to make sure all the work he puts in transfers into the games.

“The kind of performance showed all round was excellent, he headed, he tackled, he closed people down, he got a goal, he tracked runners and did everything a general midfield player should do, so that was really pleasing.”
