U23s: Welsh issues striking message

Andy Welsh believes Sunderland under-23s must fine their goalscoring spark ahead of Monday's trip to Leicester City.

The young Black Cats were held at home to a resilient Chelsea side in their opening Premier League 2 fixture at the weekend.

While the hosts ran riot in the first period, they were unable to convert one of their many chances as Joel Asoro and Elliot Embleton went closest for the lads.

To Chelsea's credit they were more dominate in the second period but fell behind when Asoro capitalised on a defensive error before ramming home from the edge of the box.

It was nothing more than the young guns deserved but Welsh's side were made to rue their missed chances as a defensive mishap, this time at the other end, saw Chelsea return to London with a share of the spoils.

"We need to work on our finishing in and around the box," he said.

"We need to have that composure when we are in those forward positions because that would have scored us more goals.

"We created some good chances but we were punished against Chelsea because we didn't take them and that's what happens in football."

He continued: "We will be better physically ahead of Leicester because we've had two groups come together for the first time against Chelsea.

"Some of our players have been away with the first team while I've had a small group, we have come together as one now and to get a game under their belts will hopefully mean we will see some improvements in our second game."
