Sunderland will travel to Rochdale to begin their English Football League Trophy campaign on Tuesday 6 September at the Crown Oil Arena, kick-off 7.45pm.
The Black Cats enter the Checkatrade Trophy for the first time as part of the Football League’s revamp, and will take on Rochdale, Hartlepool United and Notts County in Northern Group F.
Away fans will be housed in the Willbuts Lane Stand, and tickets for the tie are only available for purchase on the night and, priced at £5 for adults and £1 under-16s.
Sunderland then face a trip to Hartlepool United on Tuesday 4 October (kick-off 7.45pm) before rounding off their Northern Group F campaign with a home tie at the Stadium of Light against Notts County on Tuesday 8 November (kick-off 7.30pm).
