Sunderland’s Stadium of Light welcomed over 52,000 music fans last night as the world’s biggest boy-band, One Direction, kicked off the UK leg of their ‘Where We Are’ world tour on Wearside.
Harry, Liam, Niall, Louis and Zayn wowed the crowd with a 22 song set, including number-one hit singles What Makes You Beautiful and Little Things.
The highly anticipated show got underway with support act Five Seconds of Summer warming up the crowd with their chart topping hit, She Looks So Perfect, before One Direction burst onto the stage to a rapturous welcome from the Sunderland crowd.
The explosive evening included spectacular bursts of confetti and streamers projected into the crowd, as the band performed a lively set featuring some of their most popular songs.
A memorable encore was capped off with a spectacular laser show, ending the evening with crowd favourite Best Song Ever and a special chorus of 'Ha’way the Lads' and ‘Sunderland’ chants led by Niall and Harry.
After the show, SAFC commercial director, Gary Hutchinson, said: “One Direction are the most popular band in the world at the moment so to be able to welcome them to Sunderland was simply fantastic. It was one of the biggest shows we have ever staged at the Stadium of Light and the excitement around the region in the build up to the show was phenomenal.
“The promoter was delighted, the band thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Sunderland and the audience had a great time.“
A significant amount of planning and preparation went into this show, which presented us with a very different dynamic in terms of audience from the previous concerts we have held. The evening went fantastically well, which is testament to a great team of people, including club staff, the city council, police, ambulance and fire services, transport agencies and other regional partners, whom we work in tandem with, in order to deliver major music events to the city.
“I am hugely proud of the brilliant team effort from everyone involved in making the concert such a success and we are now looking forward to our next show, North East Live, in June.”
