DIVISION TWO: Stokoe's top-flight return

Division Two: 1975-76

Sunderland sealed their return to the top flight after clinching promotion from Division Two in 1975-76.

Under the guidance of Bob Stokoe the Black Cats began the campaign well and picked up three wins from their first five fixtures.

Consistency to any promotion push is always vital and the Lads went on a run of four straight wins on two occasions in the first half of the season to really cement their place at the top of the league.

And with that the Lads proved themselves to be a formidable force at home as they dropped just two pointy at home all season – both against the Bristol teams.

After dropping down to third at the end of January, the Lads returned to the summit at the perfect time as they won four of their final five fixtures to clinch the title.
