PROFILE

The Clown Prince of Soccer was a fan-favourite at Roker park in the fifties having joined from Newcastle United for a then record fee.

Renowned for his eccentric antics and teasing of defences, Shackleton spent nine years at Roker Park while also playing five times for England.

He also represented Northumberland and Wearmouth Colliery during his time at Sunderland as a cricketer, and was undoubtedly one of the game’s greatest ever characters.
