Before becoming an integral part of the backroom staff at the Stadium of Light, Kevin Ball was just as important on the pitch during the nineties.

A natural-born leader and club captain during his time on Wearside, Ball was part of the Sunderland side that lifted the First Division title in both 1996 and 1999, and he was named Player of the Year in 1991 and 1997, a testament to his impact across almost a decade.

Since hanging up his boots Ball has kept close ties with the club working across the academy and the first-team, including two spells as caretaker manager in 2006 and 2013.
