PROFILE

Born in Coatbridge, Billy Hughes was spotted by Sunderland scout Tom Rutherford at the age of 16.

He went on to spend 11 years at Roker Park and famously assisted Ian Porterfield for the only goal in the 1973 FA Cup final.

He was part of the Division Two title-winning side of 1975-76, and scored in Sunderland’s first European game as the Lads defeated Vasas Budapest 2-0 in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
