Club Treasures: FL 100 championship salver

The Football League is the oldest football league competition in the world, and its first season took place in 1888-89.

The Stadium of Light staged the league’s centenary game in 1999 – ten seasons having been lost to the World Wars.

As the newly crowned league champions, having just achieved a record 105 points, Sunderland were asked to face Liverpool, at the time the side with the most league titles to their name.

Liverpool won the game 3-2 with goals from Robbie Fowler, Jamie Redknapp and Paul Ince, with Allan Johnston and Super Kevin Phillips scoring for the home side.

Sunderland received this silver salver for taking part in the showpiece occasion.
